Werner Herzog made a terrific documentary this year; it was Cave of Forgotten Dreams. I’m puzzled by critics who claim Into the Abyss is the superior film or, even, one of the best films of the year.
There are some moments in the film that draw the viewer in, and I was surprised by Herzog’s access to interview prisoners and shoot sequences inside Death Row in a Texas prison, but there is little here in terms of insights and craftsmanship that has not been covered in many of the other documentaries dealing with crime and the death penalty.
I was disappointed.
