50/50

The title is a lot like the movie:  it’s 50/50.

Acting?  Check.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt is good.  Seth Rogen is, well, Seth Rogen.  Bryce Dallas Howard has unlikeable down to an art form.  Anna Kendrick is engaging.  And, Anjelica Huston is a bonus.

Story?  Eh…believable (after all, it’s based on writer Will Reiser’s actual experience), but it’s not special.  The screenplay is competent and formulaic without being overly formulaic.  It’s fine.

The same can be said for Jonathan Levine’s direction.  Everything has a place and seems to fit there, but nothing is inspired or inspiring.

It all feels a bit too much like a movie…a pretty good movie, but a movie nonetheless.  Know what I mean?
